No Em Jay Posts

I'm very proud of this blog and my own for not contributing to the billions of "Em Jay is dead!" posts that are still circulating the internet. I'm honestly surprised that it's become that big of a deal. I know he was huge in the 80s, but he hasn't even been in the news for years now. Is his death really overshadowing Iran? Gay.

Not Enough

I'll be honest...there just aren't enough hardcore bands that use vocoders and break into a techno chorus.

If you watch 40 seconds or so and feel like giving up, skip forward to 2:45. You'll be glad you did.

Sample iTunes review

I have had a hard week, and am basically angry at everything. So, in today's post, I will bash on iTunes Customer review and the mighty mouse.

First, the Might Mouse. I hate you. With a passion. I want your cord to be longer so I can generate more momentum while swinging you around to then bash you into a brick wall that is on fire. The scroll ball doesn't work after a few months, and is impossible to clean. In order to attempt to "clean" it, you push very hard on the ball back and forth hoping to magically dislodge the piece of dirt/dust that is stuck. Very technical. I'm glad the engineers thought through there design enough to ask the question "so...what if the scroll ball stops working?" BAH!

Now, on to iTunes. Let me preface this by saying I buy my music almost exclusively through iTunes. I love the service, and I think its great. I wish I could buy international music easier, but I'll get over it. The customer reviews however...maybe not. Here is my personal summary of every iTunes review ever. First, a good review.

**clears throat**

SO I DONT KNOW IF YOU HAVE HERD OF THIS BAND ALREADY BUT IF YOU HAVENT JUST LISTEN TO IT RIGHT NOW AND YOU WILL LIKE IT AND BE GLAD YOU HERD THIS SONG BECAUSE IT IS REALLY GOOD AND IT KINDA SOUNDS LIKE [insert band name] BUT IS REALLY BETTER AND DIFFERENT AND THEY REALLY EARNED ALL THE STUFF THAT THEY GET BECAUSE THEY WORKED SO HARD AND I HERD ABOUT THEM LIKE A LONG TIME AGO AND THEIR MUSIC IS REALLY UNIQUE AND STUFF EVEN THOUGH THEY KINDA SOUND LIKE A BUNCH OF OTHER BANDS BUT BETTER.

And now, for a complaint about the free single of the week.

Oh my gosh. Apple does it again. I can't believe they are so horrible and terrible to give out this music for free. They should pay us to listen to it. It is so bad that not only does it not deserve to take up the space on your 120gb ipod, but it will even eat other songs with its badness. I hate this style of music with a passion, but this song is so bad. You should listen to my opinion because I don't understand the nuances of this style of music and take every opportunity to bash it. Click yes if you agree with my mindless rant.

Can I just take a minute to request something from you iTunes customers? Please don't complain about free music just because it isn't your style of music. I don't prefer rap music, therefore, if I download a free song of the week that is rap, I don't complain about it. It isn't my area of expertise. If a song is released in a genre that I feel informed about, I will give my opinion. But to simply explode with uniformed gibberish makes us all dumber than before. Stop making the world dumber...please.

Also, if you are planning to compare a band to another one, and then call the original band unique, please stop typing. When one thing is easy to compare to another thing, it has lost its ability to be unique. Also, caps locks is not necessary, and punctuation is very important. Finally, you have not herd music, you have heard it. Herding is animals...not music. If you didn't know that, please stop posting.

Sandstorm

There were sandstorms up here yesterday, and I think thats cool. Here are some photos from a rainy day, and the sandstormy day.

Looking towards Big Bear.

The pass called "the narrows" to get from the I-15 to our place.

View of the Mojave River.

Overall, it was a really interesting experience. The winds were whipping clouds of dust up seemingly out of nowhere, the gusts would cause you to swerve a bit as you were driving, and it looked like dust was dancing across the streets. Petty cool stuff. Sadly, it is quite dangerous too.

Network issues

I realized something about the network her at work today. We have 1 full time tech guy, and the network hasn't gone down once. At my previous job, we had 5 full time tech guys, and the network went down regularly. I can't help but think that PC networks (with PC workstations) require more people to be less stable with more downtime.

One of the common arguments I hear about PCs is that they are cheaper than Macs. Lets assume a PC is $200 cheaper than a Mac. Now, some will argue that a $999 PC isn't really equal to a 1199 iMac, but that's not something we'll deal with. Lets just say $200.

We'll assume each network has 25 computers, and 25 users making $15/hour and that the tech team makes $20/hour per full time employee. For the PC network we will assume 4 hours of downtime per month which, from my experience, is pretty accurate.

5 Full time tech support = - $208,000 per year
PCs at $200 less than Mac = + $5,000 one time cost
25 user downtime for 2 hours = - $18,000.00 per year

One year of operation, assuming no replacement parts on the computers would cost:
($208,000) + ($18,000) - 5000 = $221,000

Now, for the Mac.
1 Full time tech support = $41,600
Cost saving = $0.00
25 user downtime for 0 hours = $0.00

So, the cost of 1 year of operation is $41,600.

So it looks like a PC network costs you $ 179,400 when you add in the cost of employees and downtime impacting the rest of the staff. But hey...at least you saved $200 on all those nice new machines.

Outside Opinion

So I saw this logo on the way into work this morning, and was really caught off guard. While some logos are so abstract there is no way to associated them with the company they represent, others are designed to be an icon of the trade. So the meat company that yields this logo wanted a design that was in the shape of a cows skull I presume. Instead, it looks like they sell jock straps more than anything. I guess it shows the value inherent in asking other people's opinion of the work you create.

Cool Weather

I woke up this morning, and the sky looked really cool. I had just enough time to grab my camera and shoot a few shots without being too late to work.

This is looking South-East from our guest room balcony.

This is looking due south. I love how the clouds separated enough to really highlight the vegetation surrounding the Mohave River. As you can tell, that is really the only green stretch out here. Makes for some very interesting contrasts though.

Ahh...the desert

Some coworkers and I were wandering the desert today after work to find the "right" Joshua Tree for a project I am working on, and we stumbled across something interesting.

That would be a live round, just chillin' off the road. We found another one in the same location. Crazy stuff out here. We saw some stink bugs too, but they weren't nearly as interesting. I did get some great rocks for an upcoming photo series I am working on.

I love bugs...

Therefore... I love the desert.

We found this little guy scurrying through our place tonight. Very cool looking!

Looks like here he wanted to model for me a bit. He was ready for his close up... to him. It got a little uncomfortable when we locked eyes for a moment, but he realized he was stuck in a cup... so there wasn't much he could do. That and the fact that I could smash him a toenail clipping. Once our "shoot" was finished, I let him roam the burning wasteland that is the High Desert on his own.

The Mystery of Dreams

Any comments on this post are welcome. I wanted to share a little bit about my thoughts on dreams, and a recent bizarre example of what the brain can do when it starts defragmenting the unconscious mind.

About a week ago I was "stuck" for hours in a dream about numbers. Not just any numbers -- prime numbers. My mind was calculating primes, searching for the highest prime it could calculate. I was trying to determine the primality of numbers up in the thousands. In my waking moments, I might think to myself, "oh, those weren't real prime numbers...it was just my imagination making up what it thought was prime numbers..."

However, upon waking from my dreams I sometimes have a remnant memory left on the forefront of my consciousness - this time is was a table full of prime numbers. I rolled over in bed and said to my wife, "what does 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19..." have in common? She looked at me like I was crazy -- I said "they're all prime, and they were all just in my brain upon waking from calculating non-stop for the highest prime I could find." She looked at me like I was crazy -- and I felt crazy.

I regularly see a psychoanalyst for reasons apart from my crazy dreams. Psychoanalysts are trained not only with a Doctorate in psychology, but they receive even more extensive training in working with people's unconscious mind. An analyst will welcome any remembered dreams during a session. One thing that the analyst will do will ask "what comes to mind when you think about X (detail of dream)?"

My answer to this one was, "Well... prime numbers are strong. They are independent, and indivisible. They can't be broken up by any multipliers other than one and itself." Again, the therapist asks a follow-up question, using free-association -- "and what comes to mind when you think of that?" My first thought - unconditional love. Unconditional love cannot be broken, divided, or comprimised by anything. It is strong. It is unbreakable. Kind of like a prime.

Maybe that's why my unconscious mind was searching for the highest prime number.

Just as a heads up, we have a guest blogger. For legal reasons, I will identify him as "BP". But if and when he wishes to accept our invite, he may identify himself as whoever he wants.

A little superficial background about BP - it will remain vague for legal reasons. He is a man of passion and smarts. Topics ranging from circumcision, Christianity, guns, intellectual property, and CrotchRockets... not to mention, he can sue me up the yin-yang.

...and he has a nice dag named Teddy...

we await your response BP!

Urban Christians

This very interesting article was passed along to me by a respected friend of mine at Grace Brethren Church. The article makes some very interesting points about the way contemporary Christians interact (or don't) with the secular culture. One quote that I enjoyed:
So we must neither just denounce the culture nor adopt it. We must sacrificially serve the common good, expecting to be constantly misunderstood and sometimes attacked. We must walk in the steps of the one who laid down his life for his opponents. (-Tim Keller)

I am also going to pick up Two Cities, Two Loves: Christian Responsibility in a Crumbling Culture by Dr. James Montgomery Boise, from which the idea that major cities have the greatest influence on shaping society stems. If that is the case, perhaps a move into the city is in order!

Culture Shock

BBC World Service has a great radio broadcast called Culture Shock that I listen to weekly. I heard today's edition on the way in, and thought y'all would enjoy it as well. They typically talk a lot about creative oriented stuff as it relates to trends globally. In this edition, they talk about product design and how it has become the core of western business. They reference a comment made by a new hire to GM and his announcement that GM is in the "entertainment business". Because of the affluence of the west, the products that were once designed to meed out needs are now designed to satisfy more than that - thus a car no longer being solely for transportation, but instead, a form of entertainment. Too much good stuff to articulate in here, so give it a listen.

TCG Scorecard

Last night, pwnage belonged to Frank and I. I got good draws, and Frank is a tough guy to beat lately. Matt didn't get his "discard your hand, draw a new hand, then discard that as well" cards, and Ian made a valiant effort with his equipment, but his Warrior always takes about 7 turns to reach 60mph.

We missed Justin, who I think was at a poetry reading. And that's not a joke.

the power of art

I just heard an interesting program on Fox News. They were chatting with a guy who came back from Iraq, and were asking him questions about how the media portrays what's happening there. He said nothing that he experienced in Iraq caused him as much distress as seeing how the media is presenting the war.

The conversation moved on to two photos that ran in newspapers today (I think the NY Times was one), and they connected the fact that many of the photos being used by major news organizations are from the same guy. The photographer recently graduated from Boston College, and now works for a French news organization. The conversation then moved on to how these photos are helping us shape our perspective of the war, and how it is in conflict with what many soldiers are actually experiencing. Of course the assertion was made that France being anti war, and many of the photos coming from a photographer working in France seemed to be connected.

After hearing this, I was tempted to email the Army and have them send their own team of photographers to shoot things from their perspective so we could have another view of what is happening. It's amazing how powerfully images can be used as propaganda and effectively shape our opinions of the war.

So then, be careful little pens/brushes/cameras what you draw/paint/shoot.

This is less of a blog than it is a chatroom.

THIS CLASS SUCKS!

God vs. Drugs

I have a sinus infection. I have missed three days of work over the last week because of it (which isn't normal for me by any stretch). I returned today and found that there were some projects I needed to catch up on. I emailed someone back and apologized for my delay in getting stuff to print and all that, and explained that I had been feeling under the weather. She responded with "may God heal you soon".

My first response was "thanks", but it just didn't feel right. Thinking through it, I began to think through what it is I trust in to heal me. Quite frankly, I know and trust without a shadow of a doubt that God is a healer. Not a priest/shaman/druid in WoW, but a real life healer. I truly believe that he is more than able to heal anyone of anything - including death. Scripture backs that up, and it is a huge part of his ministry.

With my particular condition however, I don't feel that I am "relying" on God to supernaturally heal me. I am relying on the medicine that the doctor prescribed. Even in writing this my perspective has shifted a bit from its original intent. I hate when people make things overly spiritual, and beyond distaste for it, I think its problematic. If a parking spot opens up in front, it isn't a sign from God that you should be at the mall. It's a sign that someone is leaving the mall, thus creating an open parking spot.

I guess more than anything, it raised a question in my mind. If, for example, we are taking medicine, should we still pray for healing? Is it OK to "depend" on medicine? Don't get me wrong here, I'm not trying to get all Christian Scientist on ya, I'm just curious as to wear the healthy balance is. Thoughts?

Schooled

Frank and Amy and Justin schooled Matt, Ian and me last night at WoW: TCG. Amy was a priest, Frank was a Rogue, Justin was a Poet-Demi-God, Matt was a Priest, Ian was a Warrior, and I was a Warlock.

Amy and Frank first destroyed Matt, then killed me, then finished off Ian. They also went down with little or no damage to themselves. Amy had like 20 allies out, too.

It was fun. I really want revenge.

Head crab HAT!

This is flippin' hilariously perfect:

Matt is going to the dark side

Not only is he considering reducing his WoW time, he's contemplating an Xbox 360. A Microsoft product. Over a Nintendo product!

I think this is pretty clear evidence that Matt has been replaced with a cyborg who didn't do his homework.

Since you've been gone

Helmet, since you've been gone, the following has happened to me:

-I tore the flexor tendon off my left ring finger
-I had surgery to repair it
-my grandfather died
-we had his memorial service
-I auditioned for a part in a play
-I got a part in a play
-I proposed to Amy
-She said yes
-I got my cast off

You need to come hang with us, or tell us if we need to pray for you, and I say this in all earnestness. We love you and want to know how you're doing.

Bah!

Oh you've got to be kidding me. I just wrote a long blog entry and it got pwned by pop-up blocker. :( here goes again.

http://www.beforethemusicdies.com/blog/about-the-film

I found this film to be very interesting on two levels, the first being it's content. It looks at the over production of music and how the fact that there are a few major record companies that control so much. The question they explore is simple: does this prevent musical creativity. Capitalism really exploits the concept that selling something doesn't require quality. I even run into that at church. The consumer (congregation in my case) really drives the message. If there is a significant need in the community, but there aren't many volunteers who are interested in it, the ministry won't start or be sustained. The issue with this is obvious I would hope. We should be establishing what things are right and good. Just because people don't "like" doing it doesn't mean it shouldn't be done. A lot of these concepts are similar to what we discuss when looking at Art vs. Graphic Design. Design is about selling things. Often in order to capitalize on a situation, we are forced to compromise what we think to be right or quality because it doesn't reach the target audience. Logically it makes sense, but it just doesn't feel wise.

The second thing I was interested by was the way they chose to promote the film. Its an exact copy of the strategy used for the "Invisible Children" film. All online promotion with "viewing parties". Makes the view feel like they are part of something underground an important. This film added advertising on XM radio though, which adds to that sense of being exclusive. Yet another touch of the previous paragraph... make the consumer feel something special and you will benefit. Interesting stuff.. to me.

WoW: Recent Drops

Fatty and I, and on separate occasion have been running Maraudon and Sunken Temple lately. I just wanted to share my drops. Before I continue though, here's some background..

I've never actually enjoyed the game as much as I did even when I got my first toon to 60. It was kinda strange that I wanted to do everything in the game myself or just with close friends, yet I failed to realized that the emphasis of the game revolves around interaction and grouping with other players. Interacting in a *PUG was one of my fears too.

After playing for a year and selling my soul to the game, I quit the game for a little over 2 months and got a refund on my life. Then I started again, and shortly got over my fear of socializing in the World of Warcraft.

*PUG - "Pick up Group" fyi.

To Ryan:

Ryan made a comment in passing last week while we were at Best Buy. I saw World of Warcraft on the shelf and said "best game ever", he replied with something like "whatever, FPS FTW". I then said "oh come on... 7 million people can't be wrong". The then said, "oh ya, everyone buying Britney Spears CDs means its good music". I fell on the floor and yelled "touche" thinking that I had been pwned in the face. Until I realized the truth... to me. When you look at how many people buy music, you could in no way argue that 100% of the people who purchase music have purchased a Britney Spears CD. There are a lot, yes. But not everyone. I would argue that a higher percentage of the world's gaming population plays WoW than the percentage of the music purchasing population has purchased a Britney Spears CD.

The other factor to consider is how many gamers have been created because of WoW. I have heard several stories about how people who have never played video games have started playing WoW. One I heard on "The Instance", a podcast for WoW. There was someone who wrote in and said that he had begun playing the game, and his grandparents (with whom he lives) were wondering why he was always in his room playing "that game". He told them about it, and they eventually decided to give it a go! So now they have family night where they all set up their machines and play. So l33t.

The second story was relayed to me by someone in a PUG (pick up group) I ran mara with this week. One of the group members asked how old everyone was. The responses rolled in "16", "19", "14"... all things you would expect. I told them I felt old because I was 26. Then one of them responded and said "whatever man... my old guild leader was a 50 year old mom!". Sweet!

So, in conclusion, based on nothing but assumptions, I would argue that WoW is in fact better than Britney Spears' music simply because it motivates people to get in to PC gaming who haven't been in the past, whereas Brintney Spears' music motivates music fans to stop listening. I am not saying that everyone needs to play WoW, but I am saying that everyone needs to respect it for what it is doing for the gaming community. Eventually people will branch out to new genres like the FPS because WoW has been the soft introduction to PC gaming.

Some gamers are concerned that it will overtake all other PC games because it demands so much attention and time. I know I have put off trying other games because of it. However, like anything that dominates a market, it forces the competition to get better.

IMHO.

to blog or not to blog

I really hate how much I love blogs. Like, it is a very exciting thing when you set one up. The problem comes when you must invest in it on a semi regular basis. Its kinda like most things in life I guess. They are so great and perfect until you need to work at it. My new car is so great... until I need to take it to the shop. My relationship with so-and-so is perfect... until a fight or tough time. Oh well, so it goes. I guess with 4 of us maintaining this sucker we will be motivated strictly by the fact that our slacking will be noticed. It would be kinda cool if we could get like, 1000 people contributing all to the same blog. That way we would be sure to have something new on a regular basis.

E-motional

I have begun to move across the internet. Which means I am E-motional.
Boh Bank Bouch Bye.

My testosterone is AFK.

Hello my peeples, /sorry, I was AFK....but for good reason.

I got a new job.

Anyways, last Friday I took the Metrolink to work. 13 bucks a pop, round trip, but without the stress of driving, the danger of crashing, and the fire of road rage. Of course I wasn't the only one who thought the idea of riding the train was genius. By the second day of commuting, I realized that there are regulars that frequent the system. I really enjoying it, like riding in a school bus..but as adults.

I leave my house at 6:45am. Ten minute drive to the Norwalk station and my train leaves at 7:05am. Validate my ticket, find an open seat, which there's usually a lot of. I play Tetris on my DS on level 5, vs. CPU. The trip takes about 35 minutes total. I get to the Irvine station a little passed eight o'clock, then a bus waiting for us takes me a block from where i work. I walk from the bus stop to work which usually takes about 10 minutes. I greet the doorman to our building and take the mail delivery elevator up to the 12th floor. Why do I take the mail room delivery elevator? Well, 4 words - diamond plate steel walls. From top to bottom, those panels go. That my friend, that place, is where my manhood is renewed. Because for the next 8 hours of work, I'll be sitting on my ass, with my nicely groomed fingernails, and soft, supple, and moisturized skin, pushing keys and clicking a mouse. I will not feel the sun on my back, nor see the sweat off my brow. It will not be hot, or cold, because the central cooling system is set at a perfect 72 degrees. My back or wrists will not ache because of the wonders of ergonomic products. Human contact is reduced by almost 50% because e-mail does everything...even your taxes. And as my balls start to shrink, I hope..just hope that UPS or DHL isn't using the mail delivery elevator, so that I may renew my manhood once again in solitude.

DISCLAIMER: PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS POST SERIOUSLY. IF YOUR BALLS REALLY DO SHRINK WHEN WORKING AT A DESK JOB PLEASE GO SEE A DOCTOR. THE TERM "BALLS" IS USED IN A PURELY METAPHORICAL MANNER. IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT A METAPHOR IS, JUST ASK YOUR DOCTOR, SINCE YOU'RE PROBABLY THERE ALREADY.

Red Steel - disappointing?

The more I read and watch about Red Steel, the more I feel like I'll be disappointed with the final product. When I first heard about it, it sounded like the coolest thing since sliced bread, but the most recent videos I've watched make it seem like it's just an FPS with a difficult control scheme. The sword fights aren't 1-1 movement translation, and in one video the guy wasn't even making full arm movements to make the slashes, he was just flicking his wrist. Gay! What's the point of using motion sensor s to simulate a sword fight if you don't even have to make the motion?

Pomo thrift store

to you.

Not gonna touch my wii for a while...

So I have decided not to pre-order the wii. Don't get me wrong, I am super excited about playing with my wii once I get it. But I think its best to wait. I'm worth it right? I would hate to get something with such new technology that has tons of glitches only to have a new version released later that is better. Though honestly, I have yet to see a Nintendo product that is released before it is top notch. That is the kind of stuff reserved for Sony and Microsoft. Well shoot. I think I might have just convinced myself to buy one. Though the new WoW expansion will probably demand all my time. Baah! What to do. Should I play with my own wii, or can I play with one of yours?

Chaos Shows One's Character

This is probably a better title for the previous post. I'm excited to be "loved on" on Tuesday.

Chaos brings insight

Im freaking slammed at work ATM, and its interesting how you see things more clearly that way sometimes. You can pick up on how people ask for things. Because I'm slammed, everyone pulls out all the stops when it comes to asking me for things... its never "hey, i need this". It starts with "oh hey... how are you? you have been working so hard!". I then say, "what can I do for you", and they sort of stumble, "oh, uh.. well I wasn't coming by for anything in particular, but I do have this one thing". /sigh.

Its funny because they don't want to waste my time. The reality is, but playing their little games and not being direct, they waste oh so much more of it. Oh well, so it goes I guess. Back to the fires.

Oh no he di'int!

Don't even go there, girlfriend.

In other news, I love this shirt that I found on Threadless. But they're all out of my size!

Hold up here...

No posting about our lack of posting just to stop posting. Unbelievable.

Maybe this is my problem...

I haven't played the newest life changing game!

/sigh

Sorry I haven't been posting... I missed the WoW South Park last night as it started as I was leaving work. I guess you could say I got ganked... or even WTFpwned. Oh well. Hopefully that is a l33t enough justification for my .

Things here are still as great as ever. We need to send the brochure to the printer today... and are just talking about some major changes. I guess I am the only one that realizes it is 2:39 and companies like printers close at 5:00. /sigh.

Still the only one posting

*sigh*

LOST was good last night. As was South Park. It was hilarious hearing the South Park kids use the language Matt and Ian use all the time. "Uber-pwnage" and such.
